Don’t Get Lazy Just Because It’s Summer

It happens every summer to so many businesses. I have never, ever figured out why but it is very, very real. Many non- seasonal businesses slow down. Many businesses that do not want to slow down, slow down because their customers and other businesses slow down so they are “forced” to slow down as well. Frankly, I believe this is a self-fulfilled prophesy and has become an accepted normal state by everyone. Everyone wants to take it slower in the summer, to take time off to play golf, go to the beach… so it happens.

Maybe I am being the Scrooge in the crowd, but I think otherwise. I think its an evil plot, probably perpetuated by unions, or more realistically, perpetuated by everyone who simply wants to return to the lazy days of summer enjoyed in their youth. Well, I am here to say, we are no longer kids. We all have responsibilities that are not being fully satisfied and there is absolutely no reason in the world we all cannot take our vacations, play golf during the week, enjoy the sun and fun and still maintain our businesses. There’s absolutely no real reason other than we all have bought into the idea that nothing happens over the summer.

I say nothing happens because we make it that way and there is no good reason for this to occur.

Get to work everyone! Make it happen, wake up. We are not doing well enough to enjoy the luxury of a two or three-month slow down. The rent still must be paid, payroll still happens, so let’s do business. Yes, take vacations, they’re not a problem. We do this during other times of the year, we can do it during the summer as well without killing our cash flow, profitability, and our customers. Let’s blow up this self-perpetuated myth and take advantage of the summer to do more, prepare for the fourth quarter, increase marketing and create more dollars. Why not?
