Identifying Trends And Following The Leader Is A Good Business Practice

The big boys do it in certain areas such as fashion. Once the major styles are shown for the next season all the copy cats jump on board and produce knock-off versions of them and this works well. Everyone in the industry jumps on board moments after the originals are released. Identifying the trends and Following the leader works.

In fact, in most instances, it is more powerful and far less expensive to be second then to be the pioneer. Pioneering requires much effort, much research, much original design work and much risk. The second in sees what works and can enter the market more effectively and efficiently with a lower investment and far less risk. However, the sooner you enter the better, as you will be closer to leading the way and therefore better equipped to beat put your more timid competitors who are playing the “wait and see” game.

Small businesses are usually far slower to jump on the bandwagon, far more reluctant to make quick decisions and movement toward that which is leading the way. They are far more likely to want to wait and see what is going to develop, sometimes waiting endlessly, figuring to jump on the bus next time around.

For example, despite the obvious requirement nowadays to be marketing on the Internet, many small business owners are still resisting, doing without, waiting for I don’t know what. For those already on the Internet, many are still watching this “Facebook and Twitter thing” (otherwise known as social networking) and thinking they will wait and see how this develops. They’re not really understanding it and not bothering to investigate and therefore missing the bus, figuring they will still be able to catch the bus later, next time around maybe. They are not yet convinced, they’re not ready, not really paying attention and observing what is really happening around them. Those that made the leap of faith earlier are reaping the benefits now.

None of us have to be the innovator, but we must pay attention to the innovators and as soon as they turn the corner we must turn with them, following quickly behind, grabbing the competitive advantage before our competitors do. We can stay one step ahead while we are simply following quickly by getting on-board early. This is the best plan, to pay attention and follow the innovators as soon as possible. Stay in front of  your competitors.

Be an early  follower, identify the trends and follow the leader, it works.
