Educate Yourself To Do Business Successfully
There are way too many small business owners who are flying blind. They’re committed to running a business yet they are not committed to having the skills, experience, education and know-how. No wonder so many fail. Unfortunately, many small business owners believe that if they have a good idea, or recognize a good opportunity, or have a marketable skill, that’s all it takes. They believe that if they open a business, the customers will show up, the sales will occur and profits will be made.
Well, it ain’t so, baby. It is fundamentally necessary to acquire many specific business skills in order to succeed in this day and age. Consider the brutal toll the declining economy takes on even the most effective business management and it becomes extremely clear that to succeed, one MUST have certain basic business skills. Marketing skills, operational skills, management skills… all are fundamentally necessary for a small business owner to succeed. It is that simple. Forget how great your vision may be, or how skilled you are in making the widget or delivering the service. Without basic business skills, you cannot succeed and you are wasting your time and money trying. It is impossible.
However, you think you do not have the time or the money to learn what is required. Not so. There are numerous opportunities available to learn the basic skills required, many as close as your computer. Some require reading, others listening or watching. There are great online videos, classes, seminars, books, even assistance, everywhere. You must first simply recognize the fact that you have no choice. If you want to succeed you must have the business skills or you will be left behind. Whether you are a great craftsman but have no business skills, or have a great idea but are a lousy businessman, it is a shame to lose your edge because of a basic failure to properly prepare and educate yourself by acquiring the business skills needed for success.
There are no good excuses for failure in this important area. There are far too many ways to overcome the educational barrier and learn how to do it right. Laziness and procrastination will get you nowhere. Previous lack of formal education is not a good enough excuse. Affordable–even free–education is available everywhere you look. The SBA has a mentoring program available all over the country called SCORE, that utilizes experienced, retired executives who donate their valuable time and knowledge to small business owners, supporting their path to success.
Stop with the excuses. Recognize the need and get on board before the train leaves you behind. You need education to be successful in business. Get it done now, before it is too late. Eventually, you must face this demon, but you can easily win.
