Focus on the Facts

“Let us take things as we find them: let us not attempt to distort them into what they are not… We cannot make facts. All our wishing cannot change them. We must use them.” John Henry Newman

Regardless of your area of business, the same general rule applies to everyone when it comes to success: only those who see their business for what it is can ensure that it continues to operate effectively. By focusing on the facts and understanding the situation in front of you, you are instantly in a position of power. When you are able to clearly identify problem areas and efficiencies alike, decisions regarding where to start concentrating your efforts become virtually obvious.

In most situations focusing on the facts means looking at something without involving how you feel about it. This doesn’t mean you need to be a monster, but it does mean you have to carefully consider your objectives before you make decisions. Even when you are exercising sympathy or consideration, don’t lose sight of your overall purpose- it should be the driving force behind everything you do.

Focusing on the facts also often involves looking for patterns. Particularly in those areas that you consider problematic, evaluate your current process or practice and attempt to pinpoint the source of error. Make modifications, experiment with new methods and pay attention to the changes. Keeping a constant watchful eye on progress will make it far easier to detect when variations should be put into place.

The bottom line: the state of your business is not a product of your feelings. It is a direct consequence of the way it is operated. Why not put the focus back on that fact?
