A Vote Against

I would like to vote against….

What I mean by this is that I would like the right not only to vote, but to vote against a candidate, in any capacity.  Wether it be in business, politics, or deciding what my wife and I will eat for dinner tonight.  Have you ever been looking at a voting ballot for the president and thinking about the candidates and simply not liked your choices?  People say you cannot complain if you do not vote, but what if you are voting for someone you dislike?  What if there is no right answer?

Not just with politics, but in general.  Why are votes not a net number?  Why not have the option to say, I dislike this or that?  Voting for the best of the worst does not tell the whole story and the beat simply goes on.  Let’s say that we have two presidential candidates, because voting for our leader is something most people know about.  People are able to vote and say what they really think.  Some vote for the person they truly like, but those of us just taking the best possible option instead get to vote against the person we do not want to see in office?  I personally think something strange would happen.

Maybe the republican and democratic candidates never see office.  Some random applicant with no real party behind them, but someone who got a few votes from friends and family or people who truly believe in them wins.  How would that effect us?  Is not knowing and playing the system a bad thing?  Maybe it turns out good as they have no affiliation trying to push an agenda.  All things should be based on the net.

How does this relate to business?  Net is everything.  Your gross revenue is a useless indicator as you could make tens of millions and then pay out so much to make that money there is no profit.  Your overhead and expenses are the votes against your business and the gross revenue is the vote for your success.  Are you going to be elected to grow and prosper in the coming years?  Are you going to be the last man standing in todays economy or are the overwhelming votes against you dragging you down?

A vote against is a powerful thing and the net is the indicator of your businesses polls.  Make sure you are not allowing votes against you to cripple your business because you are happy that the picture looks nice when you only count the positive votes.

When the next choice comes up in your mind of a group of options where most are terrible and the best choice is really the “least bad” choice, think about it.  Wouldn’t you rather vote against?

Interesting, as I frequently am confronted with not wanting either candidate but being forced to vote for one, and I am really voting for the one I disliked less over the the one I disliked the most.

Much better to be allowed a single vote against a candidate I disliked the most especially when the remaining candidate was also unsatisfactory, and therefore not deserving my vote either…this would be a great equalizer for certain. I love the idea.

This does apply to business as unsatisfied customers always vote by never returning to the business. That is a huge negative vote and hurts more then a person who never came in the first place. A lost client is a terrible loss and probably will result in additional lost business as he communicates his dissatisfaction to others.

We all get to vote negatively or positively in the business world, this is where it is the harshest reality of all, and we exercise this vote daily, by our decisions as to where we spend our money. Yes, it does get netted out in the end in he business world, as well it should, why not politically as well.
