It is time for employee reviews…here is one way to do it, that is productive and meaningful.
I believe in letting employees review themselves first. It is also important and valuable for the employee to get feedback from his manager as to exactly how he evaluates the performance of the employee as well as what his expectations are for future performance.
I distribute a short questionnaire to my employees which include the following questions:
1. What areas of your job performance did you do your best? Worst?
2. What additional training do you feel you need to perform more effectively?
3. What do you think about how you were managed?
4. How do you rate your ability and performance in handling your clients effectively?
5. Overall did you do your best? If not why and how can you do better?
6. Do you have any complaints about any aspect of the business and how you were treated?
7. What would you change in the business if you had the opportunity?
8. Do you believe you are adequately paid? Do you have adequate benefits?
We discuss the answers during our review after which I review the performance of the employee from my perspective.
If there is a manager involved, I may have the manager conduct the review, or have the manager involved in the review with me or I may do it without the manager, it all depends upon the particular situation.
It is interesting to see the differences between my review and the employees own personal self evaluation. It reveals much about the character of the person.
Try it out; see how it works for you.
