Walk – Don’t Run – To Greater Success
We all know what we should be doing for our health, but for most of us, even though we may know what the right thing is to do, we seldom do it. We eat too much or the wrong things, we exercise too little or none at all, and we live with stress. We wonder why our friends are having heart attacks and contracting various diseases. Of course, we also believe it will never happen to us. But we seldom do what we should be doing to live in a healthy way and to protect ourselves and our families from big problems, namely, us getting sick.
Healthy living is not a habit many of us small business owners are committed to, I know. We’re “too busy”. But consider the business benefits of the following particular healthy lifestyle program, one we could all do and one that has a huge business benefit in addition to the huge health benefit. This “program” is simply the act of walking.
The health benefits of walking are well known so I will not bother to tell you what you already know. The business benefits, however, are seldom discussed or even recognized and this is the discovery I have recently made and want to share with you. Walking is good for your business and will yield specific results very quickly that may be crucial to the survival and development of your business. It’s the “zen” thing…
I have recently begun to walk. Not too far at first but briskly, for half an hour, increasing to an hour by the end of the first week. This is enough to make a difference, enough to promote good health, but also enough to yield the business results I am interested in.
It’s quiet. No noise, no chatter, no interference, no one to talk to, no one to listen to, no music, no nothing. You just walk, freeing your mind to think, expand, travel, ponder, consider, resolve, contemplate, churn… In short, this aimless wandering takes you wherever you may want to go or, better yet, wherever your mind may want to take you. Walking helps you reach conclusions, discover answers, review problems, consider alternatives. It lets your mind do what it does best… work.
On my walks I find that I solve problems, come to conclusions, discover new answers, and come back better prepared to confront my business day. It is frequently the most powerful moment of the day, when I experience a breakthrough or discover an answer I was searching for and become confident in a decision I was contemplating. It is my own personal Board of Directors meeting, with me and my mind in attendance.
It works. Doing is believing. Walking provide you with a moment in the day when you can effectively solve business problems. It also feels good, it relieves tension, it starts the day on the right foot (no pun intended) and yes, it provides may health benefits.
