One Small Businessman Who Gets It
I met a small business owner today and asked him how his business was doing. I was expecting the usual sad story of reduced revenues and choking debt, crushing overhead and a dismal future. Instead, I got the most upbeat presentation of delightful and profitable growth and development imaginable! I was awestruck and asked him to what does he attribute his current success in the face of the dismal sales the retail market is experiencing?
His answer was right out of my previous posts in this blog and here it is:
He reported that, in view of this deep recession, he believed all of his competitors were “hiding out, waiting for the recession to end” and therefore, he went after a larger share of the marketplace believing there was a huge opportunity for those who dared. He acted as if there was no recession at all. In fact, he looked at me and said with a twinkle in his eye, “What recession?”
He said he increased his inventory and selection, added additional hours and staff, and made certain his staff rocked and rolled, all with a positive “it’s happening here” attitude. He invited people to come, have fun, and spend… and they are. His positive attitude in a down economy was perceived as a breath of fresh air and was extremely attractive. He promotes what everyone wants to do – feel good about spending again. He gives them permission and it works. His revenue has grown faster and higher than ever before. He gets it.
Take a lesson and apply this to your business.
He didn’t just a nicer tie than the rest of us?

The Closer
Reminds me of the blog post, I put up today – http://bluecorona.wordpress.com.
The core principles of marketing don’t change, but external factors are always changing (i.e. the economy). Everyone thrives when times are good – on referrals alone if they are any good at the work they do.
You can always find out who the great marketers are when times turn tough. Those business owners that understand advertising, marketing and the importance of quantifying all of it – often continue to thrive when times are good and bad!
Very interesting and inspiring!
Incidentally there is an interesting website that is specifically dedicated to recession victims. It offers help and discusses all issues related to recession-www.angstcorner.com. It’s worth a visit!
