Create a flatter more successful organization with a “what by when” management approach.

Business is about many individuals working together towards accomplishing a single goal, by individually accomplishing unique tasks common to the general goal.Executing plans, is the issue.

I like to call it  ”what by when”. How else can we ever make any progress, reach our goals, accomplish anything if all we are doing is trying hard to do our best. This is a failing effort as glamorous as it may sound. I assume you are trying your hardest and of course your doing your best. Why else would we be in business working under enormous pressure to succeed if we were not willing to do our best and work our hardest, this is a given.

Asking what are you going to commit to accomplishing and by when are you going to do this is the key to successful implementation of any strategy, what by when. The underlying premise here is if someone self commits to a self determined specific goal by a specific time, he is far more likely to accomplish the objectives for the following reasons. He has determined exactly what is to be accomplished and exactly by when it will be concluded. The operative issue here is self commitment and specicifity.

If asked what by when as opposed to being ordered to accomplishing a goal by a specific time, the individual doing the commitment is determining himself exactly what he is commmitting to and by when he shall accomplish the task, thus its his word, his commitment, his pride, his ego, his skill, his ability to win that is at stake, a well as a commitment made to another man is very powerful and he will stop at nothing to succeed.

This is entirely different then being told what to accomplish and when it is due. Then its someone else’s commitment and the person involved is not as invested in succes as compared to his committing himself to a specific conclusion. When self committing, one tends to be far more invested in the outcome, after all he determined what by when, he was not ordered or instructed, thus its his own self determination, he owns it and he will stop at nothing to accomplish what he has committed to. This is far more effective and far different from doing your best and working your hardest.

Self determination and self commitment to specific goals which can be measured and success determined is the key to successfully getting people to accomplish a task, as opposed to ordering success. In fact interestingly enough, the competitive spirit that drives men and the need to succeed and accomplish results in men achieving far more far more quickly if  allowed to self determine as opposed to being ordered, thus from a managerial point of view not only will the strategy be implemented successfully and on time but more then likely the goals will be greater and the time shorter if men are allowed to determine their own level of success they want to accomplish.

What by when, three extremely powerful words that if used more often will result in greater results, and happier employees as the feeling of pride in ones accomplishments when self determined is immense, very powerful and very satisfying for all involved. Your management style should include far more “what by whens” then ordered instructions. Try it you will see the results immedietaly. This is a way to further flatten your organization, as self determination and self commitment obliviates the need for middle management baby sitting the men trying to achieve someone else’s results.

Empowering your men to reach for the sky yields a flatter more successful operation and is a successful management style. Call for help 413-549-2966.
