Green works, (environmentaly friendly green), organic works, alternative energy works, its the way to go, get on the train.
It is a political statement, it is a social statement, its a marketing statement, it usually costs more, can be very profitable, and makes a wonderful business development strategy. It will provide you with a competitive advantage….and it is the right thing to do, for your clients, your business and for our environment…as well your customers want it.
So are you participating in this clear and obvious trend and taking advantage of this opportunity? No, you say, not interested in involving yourself in a pioneering effort that may just be a fad! Not ready to take such a daring step as your competition isn’t doing it yet so why should you!!!Think again, going green is the wave of today, the future has arrived, it has already begun.
In a housing market that has almost vanished, a daring builder has put up a few green alternative homes and they were snapped up before they were completed. Why?Health reasons, economical reasons, security reasons, family benefits, social responsibility, especially the alternative energy part, its politically correct and makes a social statement, its cool and everyone wants to be the first on their block to have the new green widget or system or home or car or whatever is being marketed and built as green, organic, alternative energy. Its all fitting into a life style pattern and a movement, away from traditional established ways and methods.
Its part of the change that has begun and is coming your way. Its the way to go and promises to get stronger and larger every day. At first it was expensive to do anything that was green, alternative, organic or natural, as it typically cost more to produce, volume is still low so no economies of scale are being experienced and China has not yet started manufacturing, so it has home grown quality and expense.
Not for the masses and in the beginning only for the rich few who dare to step into the alternative future. The well to do or politically active people were the pioneers and their major opportunity to express their awareness and commitment was to purchase a hybrid car, cost more, not all that efficient but it made a statement for the owner and that was adequate to sell many more cars then anyone anticipated. Movie stars got involved because it was cool, and many followed.
However it has become serious business as it has grown way beyond cool and is becoming a movement. It is no longer a toy for the rich and famous.Whole Foods, an organic grocery chain, made a huge impact on the market selling upgrade, high quality, organically grown groceries long before it was in vogue. They are very expensive and very high quality and the expense appears to be way beyond the added value, but people showed up and voted with their check book buying the expensive produce in dramatically large volumes.
They said we will pay more to have better health and be doing the right thing for the environment and our children and ourselves. Green, organic and alternative was good at almost any price, they seem to be saying. This worked so well, the competitive super markets in the New England and California markets and other major markets, began introducing organics and at a more reasonable price although still higher and it has become a major part of their sales and profit picture, spreading like wildfire throughout the food industry.
A few, very few home builders have experimented with building green and with alternative energy aspects and have met with huge success although mostly building one at a time and custom built for a specific owner, not yet generally offered to the market on speculation, but becoming more and more visible and affordable, as market dynamics begin to operate as demand goes up and competition brings prices down and the volume continues to grow as more and more people get involved and demand such products..
An electrician I work with is now working extensively on installing various alternative energy packages, including wind and solar and installing generators as back up to the grid, and is doing more business with these then with more traditional systems and services. In a down market he is growing rapidly as it appears the green, alternative energy, organic and natural market is here to say and a huge growth opportunity.
It is time to look hard at what you are doing and find a way to participate in the movement. It is socially responsible, politically correct and profitable as well as being a competitive advantage as your competition is probably not thinking green. So let him remain behind the times as you advance into the future…today. Go green, find a way, make a statement, deliver the real goods, and reap the benefits…today.
Whole Foods is, Toyota and Honda is, a handful of progressive and daring builders agree, developers of alternative systems are, farmers are, milk producers are, you can also.It takes daring, innovation and a willingness to learn and do something new, so do it, its the way to stay competitive and gain an advantage, and the market wants it. Its early consumer demand, and a clear statement.Read your trade mags, they are writing about this every day, ask your distributors, the products are available even if you have to look a little harder and spend a little more.
Mark it up and it will fly of the shelves. Take a chance, there is enough going on to support such a decision.I see home cleaners using green solvents. Green solvents are being marketed for your sceptic systems, I am beginning to see restaurants offering selected organic options, and the beat goes on.You can buy organic beer and coffee, and purified water, home wind systems and home solar systems are priced for home consumption. the message is clear, but only valuable to those who are listening and reacting by joining the movement.
Get on board, the small business can react faster then the larger businesses thus this could mean increased revenue and profitability even in a down market. Its a competitive advantage and a marketing plan. Think about it and then try it out, find a way to introduce green, organic, alternative, natural concepts to your business application.
Your customers new and old will let you know if its the way to go, or perhaps you will get a whole new slew of savvy customers more willing to buck history and make the plunge. The movement has begun and is growing daily, are you getting on the bus, or are you waiting for your competitors to force you to join them.

If the views of today’s culinary students offer clues to the culinary trends of tomorrow we can expect considerations of sustainability to play a major role in tomorrow’s menus. A new survey of its students that found the chefs of tomorrow want to serve more globally diverse dishes and conduct business in a more environmentally sensitive manner.
Nearly all the responding students (97%) said environmental responsibility will play some role in their culinary careers and more than half said environmentalism is “very important”. Knowing a food’s origins and supporting local farmers was also fundamental.
Three out of four are interested in including locally supplied ingredients in their repertoires and more than half want to include organic foods in their ventures.
If the survey is a good indicator, we can expect the influences on future menus will come from an excitingly diverse array of cuisines, including Spanish, French, Italian, South American, Thai and Mexican. Adventurous chefs, flavorful food, and a healthier environment are a future we should all embrace.
